A Cigar Box Guitar Band
The Alexandria Seaport Foundation, in partnership with ACPS provides a project-based, hands-on math program to middle school students with low math achievement scores. The program’s goals are to build the students’ math and creativity skills using hands-on building projects tied to the students’ STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curricula to maintain their success and interest in math, science, engineering, technology and school in general.
Students in this program at Francis C. Hammond Middle School performed in front of their classmates on cigar box guitars that they built themselves through the program. In December, President Obama’s Former Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra, visited the school to learn about the expansion of the math support program into the area of robotics.
