Alexandria Covid-19 Fund Hits $470k and Cash Flowing Back Into Community
The ACT Now Fund will operate as long as Alexandrians are in need, says ACT for Alexandria CEO Heather Peeler.
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Donations to the Alexandria’s ACT Now COVID-19 Response Fund have hit $470,000 and the money is already being allocated to nonprofits in extreme need.
“Thanks to your generous support, ACT for Alexandria and the City of Alexandria have begun to provide grants to the nonprofit organizations on the front lines of this crisis. As of this week, we have made $245,010 in grants,” says Heather Peeler, CEO of ACT for Alexandria in a press release today.
“We prioritized requests that support children and youth, people disproportionately impacted by the crisis (including low-wage workers, gig economy workers, people experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness, healthcare and emergency response workers), seniors and immigrants.”
Fast Relief
Hundreds of Alexandrians are getting immediate relief. Examples include:
- 70% of the grants this week will support emergency assistance for families. Organizations like Casa Chirilagua, Basilica of St. Mary St. Vincent de Paul Society and the YMCA will distribute food, household items and financial assistance to the families they serve.
- Some of the grantees, like Neighborhood Health and Volunteer Alexandria, will purchase protective equipment for their staff and volunteers.
- Friends of Guest House, Wesley Housing and Carpenter’s Shelter have funding to extend staff hours or hire new staff so they can continue to support their clients without volunteers.

Apply for Funding
“We will continue to make grants on a weekly basis as long as funding is available. Organizations can submit a request for funding here,” adds Peeler.
Because the impact of this crisis is not yet fully known, and the health and financial challenges are predicted to mount in the weeks and months ahead even with Federal assistance, The ACT Now Fund will operate as long as Alexandrians are in need, says the organization and the City.
“And while the outpouring of community support is being put to immediate use, we cannot take our foot off the gas.”
