ALEXANDRIA, VA – “I’m pleased to announce my candidacy for Alexandria City Council,” said Bill Campbell in a press release sent early this morning.

A two-term member of the Alexandria City School Board, Campbell says,  “I know our city, I know our citizens, I know our challenges, I know our history and I’m not afraid to speak up and step out on the tough issues.”

“We need to minimize the political animosity and vitriol that emanates from Washington and keep a laser focus on the real issues impacting our local communities.  Employment, housing, flooding and traffic woes don’t give a damn what political party folks belong to,” adds Campbell.

Campbell’s platform is focused on equity, affordable growth and sustainability. “Every decision that I make will be done through the lens of equity.  Nowadays everyone talks about wanting equality, but the difficult conversations are related to how do we get there?”

He says it’s not simply a matter of saying “everyone should be treated equally” or “I treat everyone equally.”  Campbell thinks the pattern of inequality that has been ingrained by “three hundred years of slavery followed by another hundred years of racist and sexist laws that built institutional and systemic structures of inequality” means there are not quick and simple answers.

Campbell graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and he was certified as a paralegal at Georgetown University. He and his wife Ruby of 37 years have three children: Janay is a Vice Principal at the Hopkins House Helen Day Early Childhood Learning Center; Cameron is a third year student at Old Dominion University and Jaquan has attended Prince Georges and Northern Virginia Community College and is employed by United Parcel Services.

At 59, Campbell is the oldest candidate running, and considers that a strength enthusiastically stating, “It appears that I’d be the elder statesman of the group!” He adds that he and Ruby can retire someplace warm and take it easy, but that they love Alexandria and are here for the long haul, which is why he is running for City Council.

Alexandria elects its Mayor and six-member City Council every third year. The next election for Mayor and City Council will be on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

The political parties may nominate their candidates for Mayor and City Council via a Party Canvass or a city-wide Primary. The Citywide primary would be on June 8, 2021. The candidate filing deadline for this primary would be in late March, 2021.

Independent candidates may also run. The filing deadline for independent candidates will be June 8, 2021, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. For more information, please contact the Alexandria Voter Registration Office, 703-746-4050.

  1. What a divisive personality. Before anyone votes for him, folks should find someone who has tried to work with him – even allies on a policy will tell you. It’s as if his goal is to be a shock-jock political radio show host, and not a civic leader. He had the TC basketball coach fired as a personal vendetta. Google it. There’s a reason he was defeated for the school board. Please, no.
