n late June 2018, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality approved a plan to prevent millions of gallons of sewage mixed with rainwater from being discharged to Alexandria’s waterways via four existing outfalls. The plan, referred to as Option B+, features a new tunnel system coupled with upgrades to AlexRenew’s Water Resource Recovery Facility to capture and treat the additional flows delivered during rain events. Implementation of this plan has been referred to as Alexandria’s Wet Weather Program. In July 2018, the Wet Weather Program moniker was changed to “RiverRenew” to highlight the positive outcomes for Alexandria’s waterways as a result of the approved plan.

As part of the NEPA process, The National Parks Service and AlexRenew are hosting an Environmental Assessment Scoping Meeting to provide information and receive feedback, comments, and input from agencies, stakeholder groups and the general public.
