ALEXANDRIA, VA-Alexandria resident Joyce Hylton is the winner of the 2021 Ellen Pickering Environmental Award. She received the award, given by the city’s Environmental Policy Commission and Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew), during last night’s City Council Legislative Meeting.

The award recognizes members of the Alexandria community who demonstrate a commitment to protecting the environment and preserving local natural resources. It honors the late Ellen Pickering and her lifelong dedication to city preservation and conservation.

Hylton was chosen for her work as a Master Gardner with the Arlington/Alexandria unit of the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). The VCE is an outreach program of Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, and the US Department of Agriculture, to which she has given almost 7,900 hours of volunteer service.

“For over 20 years, Alexandrians have benefited from Joyce Hylton’s knowledge, expertise, and generosity,” said Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. “She has led and trained over 240 volunteers, making a positive impact on so many people through various civic programs in Alexandria, while instilling a sense of responsibility to our natural environment.”

During her time with VCE, her duties have included educating fellow residents about their gardening and landscaping needs, and providing programs for the public that focus on sustainable landscape management.

AlexRenew CEO Karen Pallansch said Hylton’s service and dedication have “established her as a role model for volunteers in our community.”
