Help Save Historic Photographs: Alexandria Black History Museum Asking for Community Assistance

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria Black History Museum (BHM) is asking for help from the community. The museum hopes to apply for a conservation grant from the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM).

For nine years, VAM has announced a Top Ten Endangered Artifact honorees list. This year, the BHM’s Moss Kendrix Collection is on the list.

From Jan. 11 through 20, people can vote for their favorite artifact on the top ten list. The artifact with the most votes will win the People’s Choice Award and $1,000 toward conservation work on the artifact.

Kendrix, who lived from 1917 to 1989, is known as the “Father of Black Public Relations.” His work led to the use of non-stereotypical images of Black people in national advertising campaigns. His influence continues to this day.

The collection consists of 900-plus photographs and a small number of 3D objects. Over time, items have suffered damage from water and mold.
