Alexandria, VA – This summer’s shutdown of Alexandria’s metro stations will have a large impact on mobility for untold thousands, and from May 25 to Sept. 8 commuters and tourists will have to take alternate modes of transportation. That’s why the city is conducting an open house and virtual information session to inform residents on their options.

“I think we are treating this like a storm coming to the city,” Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said at a recent Del Ray Business Association meeting. “There’s no sugar coating it. It’s going to leave a mark.”

The platform work will be conducted around the clock, Wilson said, adding that the first week of the city and Metro’s efforts after the shutdown will determine how commuters will react throughout the summer.

“If the first week is a colossal failure they’re (commuters) going to do things we don’t want them to do,” Wilson said.

The open house will be held on Wednesday, May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oswald Durant Arts Center, and the virtual session will be held on the same day from 8 to 9 p.m. through the city’s website and Facebook page.
