City of Alexandria Invites Teens to Join the Student Health Advisory Board

The Alexandria Health Department is launching a program for teens interested in the health issues affecting their communities, including nutrition, transportation, sexual health, gun violence, mental health, and more. Teenagers living in Alexandria are encouraged to join the board, run for leadership positions, and learn more about public health.

The Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB) will hold an interest meeting on Wednesday, October 17, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the T.C. Williams High School main campus (3330 King St., Room A-113). During bi-monthly meetings, SHAB members will learn how to be effective health communicators. Members will meet with public health professionals, discuss current health topics, and learn effective strategies for communicating with the public. SHAB members will have the opportunity to create their own campaigns, events, or health interventions to address critical local health issues. These student-led campaigns and events could be featured citywide.

This program is made possible through a partnership between the Alexandria Health Department’s Teen Wellness Center and its Environmental Health Division. The Health Department knows the future health of Alexandrians depends on the next generation of health professionals, and is excited to support students as they become advocates for a healthier city.

This meeting is free, and open to all Alexandria teens. Snacks will be provided and attendees are asked to register online.
