Poisons, Potions, and Outlander Secrets Await at the Alexandria Apothecary

Historic Museum offers October tours that mix science, storytelling, and seasonal fun

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum (105–107 S. Fairfax Street) has a calendar full of intriguing experiences this October, offering visitors a mix of history, mystery, and seasonal fun. From the science of poisons to the herbal remedies of Outlander, these Specialty Tours are designed to spark curiosity in every guest.

Opened in 1792 by young Quaker pharmacist Edward Stabler, the family-run apothecary served Alexandria for more than 140 years until 1933. Notable patrons included George and Martha Washington. Today, the museum preserves more than 15,000 original objects—from herbs and tinctures to bottles and medical tools—giving visitors a rare glimpse into the past.

Tickets for October tours are on sale now at alexandriava.gov/Shop. Prices are $15 per person and $12 for Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA) Members. Advance purchase is encouraged. Proceeds support Historic Alexandria’s museums.

October Highlights

  • Poisons at the Apothecary Museum — October 4, 18, and 31, 6–7 p.m.
    Mark spooky season with a fascinating look at the darker side of medicine. This hour-long program reveals which poisons once lined the Apothecary’s shelves and what we’ve learned about them since. Ages 18+.

  • Outlandish Apothecary — October 19, 11 a.m.–Noon
    Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series will love this exploration of herbal remedies and the important role apothecaries—and women healers—played in medicine. Ages 18+.

  • New Exhibit: “Disease and the Apothecary” — Now Open
    Examine how outbreaks of Smallpox, Yellow Fever, and Influenza shaped Alexandria’s history, and how science and public health turned the tide. This exhibition is included with admission and is free for Alexandria residents. It is also available online.
