SolarizeAlexandria Campaign Returns to Help Residents and Businesses Go Solar

SolarizeAlexandria, a program that makes it easier and more affordable for residents and business owners to install solar power systems on Alexandria homes, will hold its fourth annual campaign through May 31. This year’s program provides a free solar site assessment for homes or businesses; discount pricing through bulk purchasing; project facilitation and qualified installation; financing and federal tax incentive options; and possible qualification for the City of Alexandria’s Solar Energy Equipment Tax Exemption.

The City is hosting two information sessions about SolarizeAlexandria and solar power options for homes or businesses:

• Wednesday, April 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at City Hall in the Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 (301 King St.)

• Wednesday, May 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Ave.)

Each property owner who registers for the SolarizeAlexandria program will receive a free, no-obligation solar site assessment for their home or business. During this assessment, a qualified technician will evaluate and determine whether solar power is a good option for the property.  Homeowners and some businesses who would like to pursue solar can take advantage of discounted prices that leverage regional bulk pricing. Since 2015, the SolarizeAlexandria campaign has resulted in 24 new solar power system installations, increasing the community’s solar power capacity by 88 kilowatts.

As part of the SolarizeAlexandria campaign, the City of Alexandria and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission provide the Northern Virginia Solar Map online tool for residents and business owners to conduct a preliminary analysis of the solar energy potential for their properties. The Northern Virginia Solar Map provides information on the potential size and electricity savings of a solar power system.

Alexandria joins the nonprofit Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) to offer Solarize programs with other Northern Virginia localities, including the cities of Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas Park, and Vienna, and Fairfax and Prince William counties. LEAP also works with other localities to provide Solarize programs throughout Virginia.
