ALEXANDRIA, VA-Interested in learning about what happens daily at Alexandria’s fire stations? Want to see what it takes to be a firefighter or medic? Sign up for the Community Fire Academy taking place this spring. The purpose of the Academy is “to build partnerships within the community by helping participants understand how the fire department works, and to encourage volunteering within the community,” according to an Alexandria eNews bulletin.

The deadline to apply for the March 13 to May 1 session is Feb. 16. The Academy is a weekly commitment: every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. Find the application HERE. Registration is free.

Hands-on demonstrations will be the focus of the experience. Learn CPR, how to stretch a fire hose, ladder operations, and how a fire truck works.

Over the eight-week period, participants – who must be at least 18 years old- will also go behind the scenes with the department’s Human Resources, Finance, and Fire Investigations divisions.
