Alexandria, VA – The Atrium at 277 South Washington Street was filled with laughter and conversation as people strolled from table to table, sampling savory and sweet treats from many of Alexandria’s most popular restaurants at the Rotary Club of Alexandria’s 16th Annual Taste for Giving.

The premier event, which attracted over 225 attendees, included the hilarious Alexandria Living Legend and attorney Gant Redmon as the evening’s multiple-hat-wearing auctioneer rallying the crowd to bid on several trips and get-aways. There were also numerous raffles for valuable gift baskets including everything you need for making an enjoyable BBQ feast in your own backyard, to a Mount Vernon Fall Wine Basket, and a visit to the Inn at Little Washington. In addition the traditional and well-loved secret wine bottle drawing featured excellent selections from UnWined.

Guests were treated to offerings from local restaurants, Port City brewery, and wineries with appetizing food and drink. River Bend Bistro and Wine Bar wowed everyone with their Oyster Pot Pie, filled with all the wonderful warm goodness of a pot pie showcasing local Chesapeake oysters. Dishes of India brought their famous Murg Makhani (Butter Chicken) served over rice with warming spices. Table Talk shared home-style goodness with two of their well-loved soups, chicken noodle and cream of celery. Virginia Darling served a ricotta bruschetta filled with addicting flavors.

Cedar Knoll Inn served an Autumn Bisque featuring butternut and kabocha squash. You could then satisfy your sweet tooth with a bite of Chai Latte Souffle Cake. Nando’s Peri Peri brought both heat, comfort, and sweets with their smartly spiced chicken wings, a portion of creamy macaroni and cheese, and their brilliant Naughty Nattos. Hard Times Café showed up with three of their favorite chilis: Cincinnati, Texas style, and vegetarian. The Warehouse served their world-famous She-Crab Soup. As always, it was filled with crab, a hint of heat, and sherry.

But the evening was all about the “service about self” motto of Rotary International, and that meant that all funds raised go to Alexandria-based charities.

“We have a contributions day in June where grants are handed out to various Alexandria charities. 100% of this $65,000 gets donated,” said longtime Rotarian Jody Blood.
