ALEXANDRIA, VA – Have you seen the flower displays pop up around the city recently? The Ramsay House Flower Flash is planned for this Friday, July 10, with the unveiling scheduled for noon. The display will remain through Sunday to help celebrate Alexandria’s 271st birthday.

It will consist of a floral arch and several arrangements around the benches of the Ramsey House Visitor’s Center garden. This area serves as a welcoming point to all who visit Ramsay House.

Originally built in 1724 by William Ramsay, the house was barged up-river from Dumfries, VA to its present site after Alexandria was established in 1749. Ramsay, Alexandria’s first postmaster, was a Scottish merchant and City founder. The Visitors Center was opened in 1956.The unveiling is scheduled for noon at the historic site at 221 King Street in Old Town, Alexandria.

Members of the Garden Club of Alexandria will contribute the flowers used for the display. Their efforts began as a way to cheer up residents during the pandemic.

Last month, there were three “flower flash” displays around Alexandria. The sites chosen were: Goodwin House Alexandria, Fire Station 201, and Charles Houston Rec Center. Those projects were a joint effort between the Garden Club of Alexandria and the Hunting Creek Garden Club
