Alexandria, VADemocracy Federal Credit Union donated $500 to Alexandria-based food bank, ALIVE!

“As the effects of COVID-19 engulfs life as we know it, we’ve seen the death toll rise, unemployment rise, businesses close, and more.  During the COVID-19 global pandemic, Democracy FCU remains committed to meeting the needs of our community now more than ever.  Our approach to rebuilding is simple, restore what we can, where we can, with anyone willing to attack the effects the virus has cause to our community. In doing this, we find our social responsibility as a financial institution demands more from us than access to solutions that provide financial stimulus and relief alone,” states Democracy Federal Credit Union CEO Ken Cahoon.

“Learning how we can effectively leverage our resources, we connected with Christ Church, serving as an Emergency Financial Provider.  That partnership introduced us to the Alexandria food bank, ALIVE. Originally, we sought to provide a food donation.  We then learned that due to COVID-19, that option presented safety issues. We also learned that the same money that would be used to purchase food could be donated to ALIVE! for the purchase of multiple items at the same monetary amount,” Cahoon continued.

Democracy FCU VP of Delivery Channels, Mario Mejia, made the $500 donation to ALIVE!’s Food Program Director, Ann Patterson. “It was truly a great experience working with Ann and her team,” said Mejia. “Their appreciation of our donation was genuinely received with gratitude.”

Who is ALIVE!?

ALIVE! was founded by 14 faith communities in 1969 who thought that they could do something to respond to rising levels of poverty in the city of Alexandria. ALIVE! was started as an Alexandria Involved Ecumenically, and has grown from 14 to 45 congregations, community, city and civic organization and volunteers who work together to help provide basic needs that support the people of the City of Alexandria.

ALIVE! serves more than 3,500 Alexandrians monthly by providing food, shelter, emergency help and early education. Donations support ALIVE!’s emergency services and long-term resiliency programs. ALIVE! accepts gifts of stock, bequests and legacy gifts, corporate gifts, in-kind donation and gifts made through the Catalogue for Philanthropy, United Way, workplace giving and the CFC and CVC campaigns.
