Alexandria, VA – Two of Del Ray’s favorite treasure-hunting traditions are joining forces this summer: the Del Ray Vintage & Flea Market is hosting the Mount Vernon Community School Big Flea for a socially distant outdoor shopping event on Saturday, July 11.
“It’s hard to imagine a better way to support our school community during this year of disruption than having the MV Flea partner with the Del Ray Vintage & Flea Market, started by another compassionate, caring, community-focused working mama, our friend Amy Eggers,” said incoming MVCS PTA President Kelly Chmielewski. “At a time when there’s stuff we can’t do, it feels so good to find ways—like this—where we can do something.”
The MV Big Flea, a popular community event, is one of Mount Vernon Community School’s largest fundraisers, raising over $35,000 in past years. Proceeds are used for field trips, enrichment activities, special events, computers, musical instruments and art and classroom supplies. This year, the event was cancelled due to COVID-19 at a time when the organization’s financial needs increased.
“Even though in-person school was cancelled, the PTA supported (and will continue to support) financially insecure families in our school community who are most impacted by COVID-19, so the money we raise this year will be extra important,” said MV Big Flea Chair Hallie Wilfert.
The monthly Del Ray Vintage & Flea Market returns on Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To allow for social distancing, the Market is expanding to include the Del Ray Psych & Wellness lot at 1900 Mt. Vernon Ave., plus the Salvation Army Corps lot across the street. For more information visit www.DelRayVintageFlea.com.
In addition to the shopping event at the Del Ray Vintage & Flea Market, the MV Big Flea team will also offer shopping by appointment at their warehouse throughout the summer. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit facebook.com/mvbigflea.
