Alexandria, VA – With Summer winding down and fall on the horizon, Senior Services of Alexandria looks forward to hosting two in-person events in September—the Fall Senior Academy and the Robust Senior Walkathon. Here is a glimpse of both events:

The Fall Senior Academy

The Fall Senior Academy will take place on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 am to noon, starting September 22 and ending October 13. This four-week class is for Alexandria residents 60 and older. It provides an overview of how the City operates, City services, plus a wide array of community resources, including recreation and education opportunities. Participants will also hear about various nonprofit organizations that are geared to seniors.

The speakers at the academy will be Alexandria’s Mayor, City Manager, Voting Registrar, Health Department, first responders, representatives from the Housing and Transportation Offices, Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities, and the Alexandria Library.

The Fall Senior Academy will be held in person. The number of participants will be limited to maintain social distancing protocols. Information about applying and what to expect will be posted on the City’s website (www.alexandriava.gov) and at www.seniorservicesalex.org. Alexandria is a great city in which to age and the Senior Academy is a terrific way to learn about the programs and services available to older adults and how to get involved in the community!

The 2019 class of the Senior Academy was the last to attend in person before quarantine. Join this year’s academy and be among the first to welcome back normalcy!

The Robust Senior Walkathon

Also coming this September is the Senior Walkathon. It will take place at Ben Brenman Park off Duke Street on Monday, September 27, from 10:00 am to noon. This bi-annual event is a great way to weave low-intensity exercises into a walk around the part while enjoying great fall weather. Alexandria’s Successful Aging Committee sponsors the event and it will be a lot of fun. A donation of $10 is suggested to help support senior events throughout the year. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more information as we get closer.

Enjoy the remainder of Summer!
