Remembering Cool Luke
Cool Luke, known as “The Perfect Gentleman,” was a well-known figure over the last 13 years, not only in Del Ray, but in Alexandria as a whole.
Alexandria, VA – Cool Luke, known as “The Perfect Gentleman,” was a well-known figure over the last 13 years, not only in Del Ray, but in Alexandria as a whole. His favorite human, Paul Haire, announced that Cool Luke has crossed the rainbow bridge, surrounded by his family.
Cool Luke was a rescue, a combination of Basset and German Shepherd – maybe! He came into the family at Your Dog’s Best Friends when he was approximately age one and captured everyone’s hearts for the next 13 years. He was calm, cool, and collected in temperament, participating in large human gatherings with aplomb and good manners.
In 2015, the Visit Alexandria blog described Cool Luke as “quite the hound about town.” He was the “top dog” at Your Dog’s Best Friends and the tester of all things doggie sold at The Dog Store on Mount Vernon Avenue. For many years Cool Luke was seen in the Del Ray Halloween parade, usually in a costume coordinated with his best friend Paul, and hanging out on Paul’s shoulder (no small feat with a 60 lb dog!) He held court and entertained at the Hotel Monaco’s “Yappy Hours,” and could also be found at Del Ray’s First Thursdays. In 2015, Cool Luke was shown in his classic dancing pose on the cover of Visit Alexandria’s premier promotional magazine.
Cool Luke is survived by his best friend Paul, his doggie sister Valentine, and an army of family and friends.
