ALEXANDRIA, VA – Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. To encourage people to vote, four Alexandria stores have teamed up. Old Town Books, Penny Post, Red Barn Mercantile, and Threadleaf are now providing free postcards with purchase. These postcards can be used to write to family and friends and ask them to register to vote.

The cards are available through Election Day.

National Voter Registration Day is Sept. 22. At all four stores the weekend before that day, special “I’m A Voter” pins will be available. These pins are free with any $50 purchase. The cost to purchase a pin alone is $10.

Also scheduled for that weekend, on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., is an Old Town Books virtual event featuring author Martha S. Jones, PhD. The Johns Hopkins University professor released her latest book, “Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All,” earlier this month.

A virtual discussion will take place with topics ranging from the role Black women had in securing voting rights for women in general to how voter suppression occurs today.

The event is free. To register, click HERE.
