ALEXANDRIA, VA – This afternoon the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) announced that they will host the 19th Annual Mary Thonen Beautification Awards on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. The event will be streamed live on SFDC’s Facebook page and YouTube channel because of health concerns.

Thonen was a board member and past president of SFDC.

“Awards will be presented to three properties that made outstanding efforts to improve and sustain their appearances through landscaping,” reads a press release.

The categories are: Retail, Residential, and Hospitality. Runner-ups will receive honorable mentions.

Executive Director Evan Kaufman will speak with members of the SFDC’s Marketing, Community Appearance, Planning, & Transportation Committee. This is the group committee that founded the Beautification Awards. He will also congratulate winners on their beautification efforts.

During the ceremony, a new initiative will be introduced, which is meant to “increase the livability of the Route 1 corridor.”
