ALEXANDRIA, VA – Starting early next year, the City of Alexandria will expand the Capital Bikeshare program to West End neighborhoods. The city plans to purchase seven existing stations in good condition, which will speed up expansion by two to five years.

The stations will be installed by January or February and stay in use until grants allow for the purchase of brand new stations.

Recommended locations in the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) include the Van Dorn Street Metro Station and areas along Duke Street.  For a map of locations, see Page 55 of the TMP.

The Capital Bikeshare program started in Alexandria in 2011. Ridership growth since 2012 has increased by 587 percent.

According to the TMP, there are many benefits to using Capital Bikeshare. The program helps to reduce transportation costs, improve the environment, and promote health and exercise.
