Nominees Wanted for Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award

ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission (AEPC) and Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) are looking for nominees for the Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award. Nominations must be received by March 25.

The award recognizes individuals in Alexandria who are committed to protecting the environment and preserving local natural resources.

The late Ellen Pickering was a City Council member and part of the AlexRenew board. She worked to ensure that the Potomac River was accessible to all, not reserved for private interests. As chair of the Alexandria Beautification Commission, she oversaw the installation of 1,000 cherry trees and helped create the Mount Vernon Trail between Alexandria and Washington,

The city and AlexRenew will announce the winner of the award during a virtual event on Alexandria Earth Day (April 22). The selection committee is comprised of members from AlexRenew, AEPC, and Pickering’s family.
