ALEXANDRIA-Dr. Stephen A. Haering, Health Director at the Alexandria Health Department (AHD), announced his retirement earlier today. Effective immediately, the Virginia Department of Health appointed Dr. Anne Gaddy Acting Health Director.

No reason was given in a city press release for the abrupt change in leadership.

City Manager Mark Jinks praised Haering for his direction during the pandemic.

“Dr. Haering’s leadership was key to Alexandria’s ability to respond quickly and nimbly to the COVID-19 pandemic in our community,” Jinks said. “His almost 11 years of service to our community have made Alexandria safer, healthier and more resilient. We wish him well in his retirement.”

Before her promotion, Gaddy served as AHD’s Deputy Director. She has been responsible for planning, organizing, and administering the city’s vaccination processes.
