“Dogs of Del Ray” Mural Coming On First Thursday: Dog Days In Del Ray

The Del Ray community plans to celebrate the mural’s completion during First Thursday: Dog Days in Del Ray.

Alexandria, VA – Scheduled to be unveiled at Del Ray’s First Thursday: Dog Days in Del Ray, the north wall of Stomping Ground is being covered with faces of the furry friends of Del Ray. The Dogs of Del Ray mural, envisioned by Pat Miller and PawsGo founder Karen Johnson, is being created by artist Patrick Kirwin as a tribute to the friendly nature of the community.

For $50 each, residents of Del Ray could submit a photo of their dog. Submissions are now closed, with about 200 dogs currently on the waitlist. For each submission, Kirwin is painting the face and name of each dog. “I am trying to work out the essence of each dog. Are they cute and funny? Are they happy?” explains Kirwin.

Kirwin is having fun with the mural, implementing little hidden jokes throughout the mural. Kirwin painted one dog’s name, Floyd, in pink. Get it?

He plans to cover the entire wall of Stomping Ground as high as he can go, crowning the mural with a large arch that reads “The Dogs of Del Ray.”

The Del Ray community plans to celebrate the mural’s completion during First Thursday: Dog Days in Del Ray, which takes place on Thursday, May 5, from 6 p.m. to dusk along Mount Vernon Avenue. Participants are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends to the Avenue for a socially distant street festival featuring themed activities, rescue groups, and more. Donations will be collected for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. For more information, visit www.visitdelray.com.
