First Thursday marked the debut of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s new Mobile Veterinary and Event vehicle, Waggin Wheels. The vehicle is specially outfitted for the League to transport animals to events across town and conduct routine surgery.

Alexandria, VA – Del Ray celebrated the community’s best friends during May’s First Thursday: Dog Days in Del Ray. The event’s highlight featured a ribbon-cutting of the Dogs of Del Ray mural by artist Patrick Kirwin. The mural, located on the wall of Stomping Ground facing the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, was fully funded by the community and raised over $4,500 for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Artist Patrick Kirwin and Animal Welfare League of Alexandria executive director Stella Hanly cut the ribbon for the Dogs of Del Ray mural.

“I reached out to ten of my friends to get it started,” said Karen Johnson, founder of PawsGo, who organized the mural with Pat Miller. “Those ten people kept telling people. Within a week, we had 100 dogs. It was like dominoes.” The mural’s popularity is a testament to how beloved dogs are in the Del Ray community. There were over 200 dogs on a waiting list. When the Del Ray Business Association hosted a raffle for the final spot on the mural as part of Spring2Action, there were over 350 entries.

First Thursday, Del Ray’s summer street festival, continues on Thursday, July 1, from 6 pm to dusk with the theme Red, White, and Blue. For complete details, visit visitdelray.com.
