Alexandria, VA – What do you get when you put together a creative musician, a detail-oriented scientist, and a pool of talented craft people? A small business!
Expert Handyman & Remodeling, an Old Town North business, was founded by Hugh Sutherland in 2014. An Alexandria native, Sutherland spent two creative years based in Nashville, Tennessee, and then on the road touring as a professional musician before returning to his beloved Virginia town.
He then took that creativity down another path when he opened a House Doctor franchise in 2005, operating out of Crilley Warehouse until 2014.
Today, Sutherland owns and operates Expert Handyman & Remodeling in the Montgomery Center, with the help of his business partner Emran Kabir, who joined the company in 2017, bringing a background in finance and science to the mix.
“The company has expanded and evolved,” says Sutherland. And it continues to do so, earning rave reviews along the way, thanks not only to the two partners’ complementary skill sets but also to their talented employees.
“Older homes in Alexandria often need plastering when renovating,” explains Sutherland. “And that is not always easy to find, so we provide it.” Although plastering is something of a dying art, Expert Handyman & Remodeling has several talented plasterers on staff to restore a cracked or crumbling wall or ceiling and the history that it holds up.
Expert Handyman & Remodeling completes projects well beyond plastering too. When speaking about a current project, Kabir says, “We are excited to welcome a family and their kids into a newly designed playhouse.”
The passion Sutherland and Kabir have for their business is palpable. The passion they have for their clients is heartwarming. To better reflect their growing business and growing passion, Emran and Hugh will soon rebrand Expert Handyman & Remodeling as Expert Design & Build, an expert business with a small town heart.
