Want To Learn More About Your City? Sign Up for Alexandria’s Academy Programs

This story has been updated with the correct start date for the Fire Academy. We were notified by the city that the information they provided incorrectly listed class days as Tuesdays beginning Sept. 22. That date is a Wednesday, and classes are scheduled for Wednesdays. ALEXANDRIA, VA – The City of Alexandria welcomes residents and people who work within its limits to participate in its Academy programs. These programs, which are completely free, are designed to teach attendees how Alexandria’s government, associated agencies, and community come together to create a place all can enjoy. Note that some programs planned for this fall will be virtual because of the ongoing pandemic.For in-person programs, wearing a mask is required. Be aware that some programs have age restrictions.

When are applications due? Simply look for the date on each program’s application. Program summaries and links for more information follow.

Alexandria City Academy

The next session will be held virtually on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for nine weeks, beginning September 23. This course gives participants the opportunity to learn about City government virtually in a wide range of functions, services, activities and issues. Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Community Academy

The next session will be held in spring 2022, and will not take place in fall 2021. Information

Alexandria Senior Academy

The next session will be held virtually on Wednesdays from 10 to 12 p.m. for four weeks, beginning September 22. This course is designed to educate, inform and engage Alexandrians ages 60 and up about government functions, programs and organizations that provide services to seniors. Details and application

Alexandria Eco-City Academy 

The next session will be held in person on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for six weeks, beginning October 6. This course is an opportunity to become an Eco-City Ambassador, take actions to increase Alexandria’s sustainability, learn about environmental challenges and contribute to daily sustainable practices to reach the City’s objectives for the Environmental Action Plan 2040Details and application

Alexandria Community Fire Academy

The next session will be held virtually on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. for 10 weeks, beginning September 22. This course will educate participants about fire safety and emergency medical response; department history, administration and operations; and the apparatus of an urban public safety agency. Alexandria Community Police Academy

A special fall 2021 session is full and is not accepting additional applications. The next in-person session will be held in the spring of 2022. Information

Alexandria Community Sheriff’s Academy

The next session will be held in spring 2022, and will not be offered in fall 2021. Information
