Alexandria, VA. Aspen on the Avenue has made its debut as the latest pop-up at 2312 Mt. Vernon Ave. The venue, once the home to The Sushi Bar, has been host to many seasonal pop-ups. As always, the Homegrown Restaurant Group brings a Black Diamond Run with both décor and menu.

Settle down in front the “fire place” in the Aspen ski lodge “fire place” and pick your beverage. The Cable Car Cocktail menu includes brewskis, vin, mocktails, and specialty drinks. If you are an Old Fashioned kind of person, you’ve got five varieties to choose from. The Oaxaca Old Fashioned features Casa Amigos mezcal, agave, angostura, orange bitters. Or, as a nod to the cherry blossoms, the Chocolate Cherry Old Fashioned made with Four Seasons single barrel, tart cherry simple syrup, and chocolate bitters.

Conjure up an Aspen ski chalet with a Ski Lemon Meringuetini made with Tito’s Vodka, Meyer lemon, Gran Manier, lemon curd, simple syrup, and brûlée meringue. The ski slope Liftie Cosmo will warm you up with Tito’s vodka, Bordeaux cherry, lime juice, and grand marnier. Youngblood Poutine is made with a tangle of hand cut French fries, fried cheese curds, and gravy. If this is your first time for poutine, this is a tasty way to try it.  The fries are well fried, the cheese curds plentiful, and the gravy is perfect.

Another new offering is the Chicken Chili Bread Bowl. Start with a farmers market favorite bread bowl from Bhutto Bakery, then fill it with Pork Barrel BBQ’s award winning chicken chili. See if you can make the bread last long enough to get every bite of the chili.

The Beignets, made famous at Whiskey and Oyster bring a touch of sweet to the snacks menu. They are frosted with powdered sugar and accompanied with chocolate or caramel dipping sauce.

Come on over, rest your skis out front on the ski rack, find a comfy bar stool or chair, and warm up.
