Senior Services of Alexandria Receives $5,000 Donation from Food Lion to Help Hungry Older Citizens

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) has received $5,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed neighbors in their time of need. SSA will use the gift for its Senior Nutrition Programs including Meals on Wheels and Groceries to Go to make sure that no older adult in the city of Alexandria, Va., goes hungry.

“Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) would like to thank the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation for this generous gift that will be used for SSA’s Senior Nutrition Program,” said Mary Lee Anderson, Executive Director for Senior Services. “It will allow us to increase our Meals on Wheels and Groceries-to-Go programs with the goal of reducing senior hunger in our community.”

SSA is a non-profit organization that has as its mission, “to foster independence and self-sufficiency, enabling seniors within the City of Alexandria to age with dignity.” SSA operates a Senior Nutrition Program that includes the Meals on Wheels and Groceries-to-Go delivery programs. It also oversees the DOT transportation reservations for the city and presents educational programs through monthly workshops. SSA and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the Animals on Wheels program, providing food for pets of low-income seniors; and its Friendly Visitor Program matches volunteers with seniors for weekly visits, enhancing connections to the community.

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants.
