ALEXANDRIA, VA–Are you a British ex-pat? Of British heritage? An Anglophile? Married to a Brit? Did the death of the Queen make you want to get in touch with your British side and meet women with similar interests? Would you like to join a group of fun, charitable women? If so, The Northern Virginia Pimm’s and Poppies Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire here in Alexandria is the place for you.

The Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) in the U.S.A. is a charitable, non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian, voluntary society. For one hundred years, it has been a common bond for women of British or Commonwealth birth or ancestry living in America. Its members include professionals, businesswomen, and homemakers with common interests and heritage, who meet regularly for business and social events with the common cause of philanthropy.

Members of DBE’s Northern Virginia Pimm’s and Poppies Chapter contribute significantly to the good of Alexandria—they have a good time while doing good.

Some events this DBE chapter has taken part in include:

  • Touring the British Embassy
  • Attending a fundraiser at the home of the Defense Attaché to the British Embassy
  • Joining the British Officers Club for dinners celebrating the Queen
  • Attending a Titanic Tea
  • Eating fish and chips in DC
  • Attending The Scottish Walk
  • Planting a tree for the Queen’s Green Canopy Project in Ben Brenman Park

  • A fundraiser at the Halloween production of “Dracula”, benefiting Alice’s Kids
  • A tea/baby shower for Kate and William, with the gifts going to a local charitable organization for children
  • A Royal Wedding watch party
  • A “wake” for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
  • A Tea and Fashion Show emceed by Alexandria’s own Monte Durham of “Say Yes to the Dress, Atlanta”
  • Monthly meetings where there is almost always tea and Pimm’s Cups (hats and tiaras optional)

Membership in the DBE is extended to women residing in the USA who are of British or Commonwealth heritage by birth, naturalization, or ancestry, and to women who are the wives or partners of persons of British or Commonwealth heritage by birth, naturalization, or ancestry. And British isn’t just Britain—it is the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Realms, Overseas Territories and the entire Commonwealth!
