Alexandria, VA – With tykes lined up on decorated bikes, and parents ready to walk and run alongside, Wheel Day maestro Tom Tyler fired up his handheld megaphone and gathered the participants, and announced, “Remember, Wheel Day is a parade and not a race,” to loads of laughter.

Since the 1940s, this traditional day celebrated on Memorial Day Sunday, sponsored by the North Ridge Citizens Association and hosted by the Beverley Hills United Methodist Church, brings kids of all ages to decorate their bikes or other wheeled toys and parade down Old Dominion Blvd from the circle at Chalfonte to the church for refreshments. This year elected officials and candidates joined the fire department and other groups for the fun, neighborhood-wide party. Outstanding entrants got special ribbons.
