Expect the Unexpected – When Life Throws You a Curveball

By Gretchyn Meinken, Esq.

Alexandria, VA – It’s happened to you at some point – that feeling of “I wish I’d planned for that.” Then you muddle through the mess, thinking about how it could have been different. The reality is that there are many things we can plan for, but then there are some that we simply cannot.

Why not take the opportunity to plan for the life moments that you can plan for? Join us for this year’s Senior Law Day for the City of Alexandria on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm at First Baptist Church, 2932 King Street in Alexandria. As you might suspect, the theme is Expect the Unexpected – When Life Throws You a Curveball. The Alexandria Bar Association and Senior Services of Alexandria sponsor the event.

This year’s presenters will cover the basics of estate planning, late marriage and gray divorce, scenarios involving adult children, and housing options as you age. For estate planning, the panelists will discuss the estate planning documents you should have in place to cover the expected and the unexpected, including Advance Medical Directives, General Powers of Attorney, and Last Wills and Testaments.

For those marrying later in life, the panel will discuss tools for asset protection (especially when there are children from prior relationships), what those tools can protect and when, and considerations for caring for each other financially. They will also discuss the financial implications of divorcing later in life.

Panelists will discuss adult children with disabilities, children who flew the coop but have returned to nest in your home (and options for getting them to leave the nest again), and adult children who become your caregivers. Speaking of caregivers, the panel about housing options will cover the feasibility of aging in place (possibly with those adult children as your caregivers), different types of housing options for those who need to leave their home, and how to plan financially for these options.
