GOOD NEWS: The Collingwood Christmas Light Display Will Return
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. The beloved Collingwood light display at 1601 Colllingwood Drive that has legions of local fans and captured the nation in 2018 when it won ABC’s “Great Christmas Light Fight” will return in 2020.
On Sunday, July 19, homeowner Bill Vaughn posted a photo and message on his “Collingwood Lights” Facebook page that showed a row of electronic boxes with the message, “The controllers were lined up in the office with care in hope that this Christmas the display would be there.”
The news comes after the display went dark in 2019 for the first time in 25 years when Vaughn faced uncertain health challenges. Thousands of residents have made it a family tradition to drive past the always creative, and over-the-top holiday light show, but last year that support turned to heartfelt thank you messages and offers of love and fortitude.
In fact, the last message Bill posted on the Facebook page before yesterday was on Christmas Eve, 2019, which said simply, “I want to thank everyone for their cards and well wishes. They have meant a lot. Here is to a healthier and brighter 2020. Wishing all a Merry Christmas!”
Vaughn says, “Twenty-five years ago after being scolded by my wife for not having Christmas decorations on our house this seasonal journey began.”
Vaughan received a trophy for his big ABC “Christmas Light Fight” win along with $50,000 and bragging rights. He said at the time, “I’ve lived here since 1966 and it’s just a nice way to give a little something back.”
