City of Alexandria Names Felipe Hernandez New Fire/EMS Chief
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Felipe Hernandez Jr. is the new fire and emergency medical services chief for the City of Alexandria. Hernandez, who becomes the first Latino to hold the position in the city’s history, begins his new job July 8.
“Chief Hernandez impressed our team with his experience and technical competence in fire and emergency medical service,” said Parajon. “He brings a modern, data-driven approach to public safety, said City Manager James Parajon. “But most importantly, Chief Hernandez knows that strong relationships with good people will ensure we continue to grow and thrive as an organization. He is a highly effective communicator and leader with the qualities and resilience to lead our fire department for years to come.”
He most recently served as Superintendent of the New York State Academy of Fire Science.
He began his career as a firefighter in Rochester, New York. Over the last 25 years, he climbed through the ranks. Before retiring in 2023, he was Fire Chief, where he led a group of 482 sworn and 24 civilian personnel. The department, under his leadership has received high ratings and is accredited.
Hernandez is a Chief Fire Officer, designated by the Commission on Professional Credentialing, and a National Emergency Medical Technician. He holds additional certifications in fire officer instruction, health, and incident safety.
Hernandez will take over from James Schwartz, who has been serving as Interim Chief since January.
