Sheriff, Commonwealth’s Attorney Begin Re-election Campaigns
ALEXANDRIA, VA-On Jan. 7 during the Alexandria Democratic Committee meeting, Sheriff Sean Casey announced his re-election campaign. Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter has announced his campaign via press release. The Democratic Primary takes place in June.
“As a lifelong Alexandrian, public school graduate, and 20-year public safety veteran, serving as Sheriff of this incredible community has been my greatest honor,” Casey said. “Every decision I’ve made has been guided by my motto: Community, Compassion, and Commitment – values that are deeply rooted in our Democratic ideals.”
“During this campaign,” Porter said, “I am emphasizing the prosecution of gun violence and organized retail theft cases and the protection our most vulnerable citizens, such as seniors, children, and people diagnosed with [intellectual] disabilities.”
The sheriff has endorsed Porter’s campaign, calling him “an innovative and forward-thinking prosecutor.”
Before becoming Commonwealth’s Attorney, Porter, who grew up in Alexandria, served as a police officer and trial prosecutor. In his career, he has handled some of the city’s most challenging jury trials, such as Commonwealth v. Charles Severance and Commonwealth v. David Cunningham.
Since taking office in 2022, Casey has done much to improve community outreach, prevent gun violence, and stem the opioid crisis. With his leadership, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Moms Demand Action to promote safe gun storage. He also worked to introduce an opioid treatment program within the William G. Tisdale Adult Detention Center that focuses on treating addiction with medical intervention. Casey has also made employee wellness a priority.
“Sheriff Casey has been a strong, innovative, and transparent public safety leader in our community,” Porter said “As Sheriff, he has helped keep our community safe, while treating those in his custody with care and compassion. I am excited that Sean is running again and looking forward to working with him during his next term.”
In related news, Del. Elizabeth Bannett-Parker, the former vice mayor, has announced her bid for re-election in the Virginia House of Delegates. She serves the 5th District.
