Alexandria Library Hosting Second Annual Black Family Reunion Event
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Alexandria Library is once again hosting the Black Family Reunion event Saturday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The purpose of the event, as The Zebra reported last year, is to fill in the gaps of the city’s Black history. Documents and photos shared by Black residents were scanned for the library’s Local History/Special Collections for Alexandria’s permanent historical record. The library aims to build on that success.
“Last year we knew there was history out there to preserve, and we were thrilled with the positive response from the community,” said Library Director Rose T. Dawson. “This year we know there is still work to be done, and so much more history to preserve for future generations. So the party continues with food, music, games, and of course friends and family. We can’t wait to see you there!”
The Reunion is free and open to the public. Those who donate items to be scanned at Barrett Branch (717 Queen St.) will receive free tickets for food during the event.
To kick the festivities off, Jason Wood will give a presentation called “Local Legacies: The Wood Family” about what previously donating meant to him. Mayor Justin Wilson will also read a proclamation.
Want to donate? No need to wait until Sept. 14. Items are being accepted now. Simply click HERE to get started.
