ALEXANDRIA, VA-A new halal restaurant, Zaytoun Halal Grill, will soon open on Duke St. According to a Special Use Permit on the City of Alexandria website, Zaytoun LLC and Mushtaq Habibi have applied for a change of ownership in the space currently occupied by AJ’s Pizza and Cheesesteak (5418 Duke Street).

The city received the application Nov. 21. The final day for public comment is Dec. 19.

Halal food is prepared in adherence to Islamic Law in the Quran. Haram, on the other hand, is food that is prohibited, according to the sacred text.  WebMD says halal food cannot have “any ingredients from haram sources.”

Haram foods, for example, include pork, alcohol, and foods that contain alcohol as an ingredient. If a meal does not contain these products and a few others, it is considered halal.

Zaytoun Halal Grill is already listed on Google at the address above, and its Instagram page has a week old post that reads “Coming soon!”
