Historic Basketball Game in Alexandria Ends in Win for GW Girls
ALEXANDRIA, VA-History was made on Tuesday, Dec. 3. For the first time ever, ACPS hosted the Alexandria City Middle School Girls Basketball Championship. The contest between the George Washington Middle School Girls team and the Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School Girls team took place in the Alexandria City High School gym.
Both teams entered the championship with 5-1 records. The game, which consisted of two halves, ended in a victory for GW, 22-14. GW point guard Dallas Broussard, an eighth grader, was named MVP. She was key to GW’s offense and played tenacious defense. Jefferson-Houston was led by the performance of sixth grader Kali Bates. She showed her unique ability to find the hoop during the six-game season.
“Both teams have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment since October, working tirelessly to achieve a successful and competitive season,” said GW coach Andrew Storr. “We are extremely proud of the hard work and determination that our team demonstrated throughout the season. Their commitment truly paid off, and winning the championship game is a testament to their effort, teamwork and resilience. The credit for this success truly belongs to the players.”
Prior to this school year, the school divison’s middle school students were unable to take part in athletic programs in the city. Most opportunities available to them were pay-to-play, meaning access to sports was limited.
“This season was a very impactful year for ACPS as we showcased the ability to cultivate sportsmanship, competitiveness and collaboration in our middle school program,” said Jefferson-Houston’s coach Harrison Home. “It was an honor to coach and compete this year, and all praise goes to our young ladies who took the first step in what we as a middle school athletic department hope to be a great addition to our district athletics program.”
With the success of this sport, middle school athletics will expand to include boys’ and girls’ soccer, cheerleading, football, forensics, boys’ and girls’ tennis, volleyball, and debate teams. These sports are scheduled to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year.
