Alexandria Hotels Topped 90% Occupancy During Two Big Summer Weekends
America250 celebrations and Alexandria’s World Cup moment helped turn around a difficult start to the year for the city’s hotel sector, with occupancy topping 90 percent during two major summer weekends.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria’s summer visitors did more than stroll King Street and crowd the waterfront. A lot of them stayed the night.
Hotel occupancy in the city climbed above 90 percent during both the June Sails on the Potomac weekend and the July 4 weekend, according to tourism figures presented by Visit Alexandria to City Council on Sept. 8 and reported by ALXnow.
The numbers are especially notable because Alexandria began 2026 with a tourism headwind. Visit Alexandria reported that hotel revenue per available room — an industry measure known as RevPAR — was running nearly 10 percent below the prior year in January. By the end of June, that measure had swung to about 3 percent above the previous year.
The share of visitors staying overnight also increased, from 77 percent to 82 percent, according to the presentation.
Two unusually large attractions helped drive the rebound. Alexandria leaned heavily into America’s 250th anniversary, including Sails on the Potomac and the expanded Alexandria Jazz Fest on the waterfront in June. The city also gained international attention as a base for World Cup activity during the summer.
For Alexandria, overnight visitors matter beyond the hotel lobby. Travelers who stay in town are more likely to eat in local restaurants, shop, visit attractions and spend additional time in the city — while hotel activity also generates tax revenue that supports City services.
The summer numbers suggest that large-scale events can translate into measurable local economic activity, a connection city officials have been watching closely as Alexandria invests in destination programming.
More tourism data are expected this week. Visit Alexandria’s annual meeting is scheduled for Sept. 16, when the organization plans to review the previous year and look ahead.
