Last Call: Alexandria’s Duke Street Plan Comment Window Closes Tuesday

Alexandrians have until Tuesday to comment on working recommendations for the corridor from Union Station to Van Dorn Street

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandrians who want a say in the future of Duke Street have one more weekend to review the City’s working recommendations.

Public comment on the current recommendations for the Duke Street Land Use Plan closes Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to the City’s official project page.

The 18-month planning process covers the Duke Street corridor from Alexandria Union Station to Van Dorn Street and the future Landmark/West End development. Decisions made through the plan could influence land use, building form, transportation, parks, public space and the character of neighborhoods along one of Alexandria’s busiest roads.

The City has posted the working recommendations in an interactive online format, where residents can review individual proposals and leave comments. Printable recommendations, figures and a glossary are also available from the project page.

The City’s notice is direct: “Public Comment is encouraged and will be open through September 15.”

What Happens After Tuesday?

The current comment deadline is not the end of the process.

Planning staff will release the full draft plan on Tuesday, Sept. 29, followed by another 30-day comment period through Oct. 28.

The City is marking that release with Community Meeting No. 9 from 7–9 p.m. Sept. 29 at Patrick Henry Recreation Center, 4653 Taney Ave. A presentation begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by questions at 7:45 and an open house at 8:15.

The meeting will include cake and barbecue, and a Zoom option will be available for the presentation and question-and-answer portion. The City says food, childcare, Spanish interpretation and Amharic interpretation will be available.

But residents do not need to wait for the celebration to weigh in. This weekend is the final opportunity to respond to the working recommendations before that full draft is assembled.
