ALEXANDRIA, VA-Since 2016, Mike Sloper has helped the Ballyshaners during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The group honored him for his service on Saturday with the Volunteer Driver Award.

Ballyshaner Harold Harold Sinnett told The Zebra the award is for “years of dedicated duty and service.”

Along the parade route, Sloper drives his 1970 Oldsmobile 442 convertible. His passengers have included former mayors Justin Wilson and Allison Silberberg. He also transported last year’s grand marshal, Charlotte Hall.

“As a lifelong resident of Alexandria, I love this town and having the opportunity to participate in this wonderful tradition,” Sloper wrote in an email to The Zebra.

He was recently notified by the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee that his car won first prize in the GW Birthday Parade’s contest for Antique and Classic Vehicles. He is due to receive a certificate at a later date.
