ALEXANDRIA, VA – In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, Alexandria Celebrates Women will plant a pinwheel garden on Friday, April 4, starting at 9:30 a.m. at Charles Hill Park, 300 East Oxford Avenue in Del Ray, Alexandria, VA.

“Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse prevention,” says Pat Miller, founder and chair of Alexandria Celebrates Women.  In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the Pinwheels for their Prevention campaign. “What they found is that people respond positively to pinwheels, which represent childlike whimsy and lightheartedness. All children need to grow up happy, healthy, and prepared to succeed in supportive families and communities,” Miller explained.
Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins will be at the pinwheel planting to read a proclamation from the City.  Poems from child abuse victims and others will be read.  Other leading Child Abuse Prevention groups will also be in attendance.
The public is invited to attend and plant a pinwheel to show support for prevention of child abuse. “We hope families will bring kids to join elected officials and civic leaders who will be on hand planting pinwheels, which will be provided,” said Miller.
