ALEXANDRIA, VA – This is a story no one wants to write. So. Much. Wrong. Here.

And yet … “Momma” and her newborn puppies were brought to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) over the weekend after they were found abandoned in a wet cardboard box near Jones Point Park.

By the time the little family arrived at the AWLA, all but three of the newborn puppies had passed away. Momma and her remaining three puppies were rushed to the Veterinary Emergency Group. They performed emergency surgery to remove one more deceased puppy still inside Momma, and then, heartbreakingly and despite everyone’s best efforts, the remaining three puppies passed away over the next 24 hours.

Momma knows her babies are gone. Trust us on this.

Momma did her mommy best to care for her newborns, despite her being underweight, anemic, and neglected for a long time. (The AWLA noted that French Bulldogs typically give birth via C-section because of the breed’s narrow hips and large heads).

Even if Momma’s owner didn’t know this…still…(ok there’s a reason The Zebra doesn’t ask me to write op-eds).

Back to the story – Would you please help the AWLA with Momma’s emergency surgery by donating to their Sarah’s Fund? Created in 2003, Sarah’s Fund covers special medical treatment for pets who need more care than the AWLA standard budget allows. Momma’s emergency surgery cost more than $6,000, and she needs ongoing medical care for the foreseeable future.

Your gift to support Momma’s healing journey is tax-deductible.

Thank you for helping the AWLA team care for this heartbroken Momma!
