Maryland Tax-Free Week Kicks Off Tomorrow August 10: A Shopper’s Paradise Since 2007

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Missed the Virginia sales tax holiday last weekend? You get a second chance, but you’ll have to cross the bridge. The annual Tax-Free Week on select items begins tomorrow, August 10 in our neighboring state to the north and runs through next Saturday August 16.

Tanger Outlets National Harbor, for example, is just minutes from Alexandria. Once you get off the  Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the outlet mall is a short drive away. Or hop on the water taxi from Old Town and make it a National Harbor day trip. The sprawling outdoor mall will be humming with Alexandrians all week, hunting for bargains and back-to-school clothing. Unlike Virginia, the Maryland sales tax holiday is an entire week, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make the trek. You’ll find this reporter at Tanger next week.

During Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, customers do not pay the state’s 6% sales tax for clothing and shoes priced under $100, and the first $40 for backpacks. The sales tax will be waived, regardless of the number of items purchased.

“As costs continue to go up, shopping during the sales tax holiday is a great way to keep money in the pockets of hardworking shoppers and help their budgets go further,” Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman said. “I encourage everyone to shop in Maryland during the sales tax holiday, save money where you can, and support the local businesses that keep the economy moving forward.”

Maryland’s annual sales tax holiday was established by state law in 2007 and coincides with the looming new school year.

“Shop Tax Free Week is more than a 6% discount; it is an opportunity to support local businesses, and ease the financial burden on families preparing for the school year,” said Cailey Locklair, President of the Maryland Retailers Alliance.

During this week-long tax holiday, certain clothing, footwear, and backpacks will qualify for tax exemption.
