KME.digital Marks 20 Years of Growth, Innovation, and Digital Marketing in Alexandria
Alexandria digital marketing firm celebrates two decades of innovation, growth and community.

Alexandria, VA – With the George Washington Masonic National Memorial rising in the background, clients, colleagues, friends and family gathered on a rooftop in Alexandria recently to celebrate a major milestone for KME.digital, the Alexandria-based digital marketing agency marking two decades in business—and looking ahead to its next chapter. The evening, catered by Bittersweet Catering, brought together many of the people who have helped shape the company’s success over the past 20 years.
For co-owner Kelly McLaughlin, the company’s story began in an unlikely place. “It’s an interesting story, with lots of turns,” she says.
Long before artificial intelligence and digital marketing became everyday business terms, her husband and co-owner, Ted, had developed a patented stroller accessory and built a website to sell it while working at Accenture, where he helped architect digital government solutions. Along the way, he became fascinated with the emerging world of search engine optimization and early social media platforms like MySpace, Flickr and Tumblr.
At the same time, Kelly was learning Google’s advertising platform while managing online advertising campaigns for a passport expediter.
“These two skills came together as KME Web Design,” McLaughlin said. “Several of those early customers from 2006 are still with us today.”

Nearly two decades later, those same entrepreneurial roots continue to shape the company as its digital marketing, web development and business consulting services explode from its Alexandria headquarters.
Finding a Home in Alexandria
The business began in Loudoun County before moving to the George Mason University Mason Enterprise Center, then to Fairfax City, and finally to Alexandria three years ago after the McLaughlins relocated following the graduation of their four children.
“Our deliberate moves east toward Washington essentially followed the volume, scale and diversity of opportunities,” McLaughlin said. “Alexandria is an exceptionally fun, interesting, vibrant yet manageable small city, with easy access both to DC and the rest of Virginia.”
The city’s collaborative business community has become an important part of KME’s identity.
“The energy and connectivity we’re building here in Alexandria is scaling fast and furious,” she said. “Meeting and collaborating with so many new businesses, organizations and community members is critical to preserving and growing our high-energy, fun and meaningful culture.”
A Culture Built Around People
McLaughlin credits much of the company’s success to its employees.
“Our attrition rate and employee feedback have been exceptional every year, even through the ups and downs of regional economic challenges,” she said.
Many employees join the company through internships or immediately after graduating from James Madison University and George Mason University. Team outings, volunteer projects and hosted events help create what she describes as a close-knit, collaborative culture.
Clients, she said, are often surprised by the depth of expertise available under one roof.
“We’re truly a one-stop shop for digital services and expertise,” McLaughlin said. “Our responsiveness and focus on client success are what people remember.”
Success Beyond Clicks
While KME.digital offers everything from website development and branding to government contracting support, advertising, CRM systems and public relations, McLaughlin says success isn’t measured by likes or page views.
“Things like social shares, impressions and website hits are great campaign metrics,” she said. “But they’re not the end target.”
Instead, the company focuses on measurable business outcomes.
“Success means more leads, more calls, more referrals, more contracts won, more mission impact, more business.”

That philosophy proved especially valuable during the pandemic, when one client that relied entirely on in-person conferences suddenly needed a new way to reach customers. KME created and promoted a webinar series that ultimately generated more leads and product demonstrations than the company’s traditional conference strategy.
Giving Back Close to Home
Although KME serves national and international brands, the company remains deeply invested in Northern Virginia.
The firm supports organizations including Luke’s Wings, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, NIB, The Campagna Center’s annual coat drive, and works closely with regional organizations including the Chamber ALX, Leadership Alexandria and the Northern Virginia Technology Council.
“Our local connectivity and support are critical to our growth,” McLaughlin said. “We’re able to connect in person with businesses and organizations that matter to our community.”
Looking Ahead
As artificial intelligence reshapes nearly every aspect of digital marketing, McLaughlin believes businesses should embrace the technology—but thoughtfully.
“Focus on augmentation versus replacement,” she said. “Leverage partners and professionals to help you focus on the AI that’s truly helpful.”
Her advice for businesses trying to strengthen their online presence is equally practical.
“Don’t try to do it all yourself,” McLaughlin said. “There is very effective, continually expanding, technically current and accessible help available.”
As KME.digital enters its third decade, the company is launching a refreshed brand, a redesigned website, expanded AI services and new creative innovation initiatives.
If the anniversary celebration was any indication, the company’s future appears just as energetic as its beginning.
