Alexandria’s Leaf Blower Rules Are About to Change—And You Can Try the Alternatives for Free

A hands-on October 27 demonstration comes ahead of a November 17 ban on gas-powered leaf blowers.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Fall leaves may be falling, but one familiar Alexandria soundtrack is on its way out. Beginning November 17, gas-powered leaf blowers will be prohibited within the city limits. Before that change, residents and landscapers can try the alternatives in person.

The City of Alexandria is hosting a free electric leaf blower demonstration October 27 at Ben Brenman Park, with multiple equipment suppliers and a chance for visitors to test compliant models. City staff will answer questions about enforcement and disposing of old equipment.

What homeowners and landscapers need to know

City Council approved the rule in May 2025 and provided an 18-month phase-out period. The prohibition covers households, businesses, property managers and landscaping companies—not just city crews. Violations may bring civil penalties of up to $500.

The city says its goals are quieter neighborhoods and less exhaust pollution. It also suggests low-tech options, including mulching leaves into lawns, sweeping or raking, and using leaf scoops.

This isn’t just a rule to read about: the October demonstration is an opportunity to compare the equipment, ask practical questions and plan before the deadline.
