Alexandria Expands School Zone Speed Camera Program for 2025–26
ALEXANDRIA, VA – The City of Alexandria will expand its school zone speed camera program in the 2025–26 school year, adding three new locations to improve safety for students walking and biking to school.
New camera sites include:
- Alexandria City High School – King Street Campus (King Street between Quaker Lane and Scroggins Road)
- Alexandria City High School – Minnie Howard Campus (Braddock Road between Marlee Way and Marlboro Drive)
- William Ramsay Elementary School (North Beauregard Street between North Morgan Street and Roanoke Avenue)
Existing cameras will remain in place near Francis Hammond Middle School, John Adams and Ferdinand T. Day Elementary Schools, and George Washington Middle School.

At the new locations, cameras will begin a 30-day warning period on September 29. Automated ticketing will start November 3.
Each school zone covers about a quarter mile and enforces a 15 MPH limit when flashing signs are active. At both Alexandria City High School campuses, cameras will also monitor midday speed limits while students transition between campuses.
Locations were chosen based on crash history, traffic volumes, speed data, and the number and age of students. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, speed cameras can reduce crashes by more than 50%. The program also frees police officers to focus on other high-priority needs.
Speed cameras use radar to record violations. After review by law enforcement, a citation is mailed to the vehicle owner, lessee, or renter. The maximum fine is $100.
The City’s speed camera program supports its commitment to Safe Routes to School, addressing parents’ concerns about traffic safety near schools.
