Local Restaurants Support Furloughed Government Employees

Alexandria, VA — We hope the government shutdown ends soon, but in the meantime, here are some shutdown specials available to furloughed Feds. Many sites require you to show your Federal ID. Call ahead to confirm details, as this information is subject to change.

Alexandria Restaurant Partners: 50% off.

a.kitchen+bar DC: Free dish with purchase of cocktail or NA beverage.

Alfreda: BOGO pizza (buy one, get a plain pie free) and + $8 spritzes, Mon–Fri 3–6 PM
½-off wine bottles on Wednesdays

Amazonia: Sour Hour (Mon–Fri open–7 PM; all day Sun): ½-price anticuchos; select bites $10; ceviche $19; $9 pisco sours/punches; select wines & NA wine

Capital Area Food Bank: Adding distribution times and locations to help furloughed and unpaid government workers.

Carmine’s: All-day happy hour during the shutdown for everyone: $5 meatball sliders; $8 “Here We Go Again” (frozen big berry Cosmo), and “The Essential Worker” (frozen peach bellini). Bar area only.

Chalkboard Wings & BBQ: has teamed up with The Kingstowne Communion to offer completely free meals to furloughed workers and their families on Tuesdays. We’re offering comfort foods with a bbq twist to them. This week we’re doing choice of smoked then fried chicken leg quarters with mashed potatoes or our smash burgers with fries.

Compass Coffee: Free pastry with any drink.

Cork Wine Bar & Market: Downstairs bar happy hour 3 PM–close with federal ID: $8 select wine by the glass, $5 Frico can, $5 avocado toast, $6 fries.

Daru & Tapori: All-night happy hour Sun–Thu at both spots (menus available online).

Doro: $12 fried chicken lunch specials daily from 11 A.M., fried chicken (1-piece) + any side, chicken tenders + any side, or fried chicken sandwich with berbere

Duke’s Grocery: Complimentary shot of bourbon or glass of house wine with any burger or entrée; $5 select beers.

Gogi Yogi:  Complimentary beer with any all-you-can-eat option.

Food trucks will be stationed in different neighborhoods, serving meals to federal employees and their families. Locations may change as needs evolve, the latest meal sites and times will be posted on their website.
