Pawfectly Delicious Dog Treats Expands Sustainability Efforts in Alexandria

By Darcy Kohn
Alexandria, VA – At first glance, Pawfectly Delicious Dog Treats looks like a small-batch bakery for furry four-legged customers. But behind every bag of the ginger snap dog treats is the nonprofit’s broader mission that focuses on an inclusive workforce, environmental responsibility, and community partnership.
The Alexandria-based nonprofit produces all-natural dog treats, but their core objective is providing paid employment and job training opportunities for adults with disabilities. Its tagline,“Treats that transform lives,” speaks to the organization’s dual commitment: creating high-quality products while also expanding meaningful, paid employment in the local community for those who otherwise do not have the opportunity.

In 2024, Pawfectly Delicious took a major step toward reducing its environmental footprint by transitioning its signature 4-ounce and 8-ounce treat bags to 100% compostable materials. The move significantly reduced the organization’s reliance on traditional plastic packaging and reinforced its commitment to sustainable business practices.
“After our team participated in the ALX Dog Walk a few years ago, I started paying closer attention to how small, everyday choices can make a real difference for the planet,” said Anne Tuccillo, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Pawfectly Delicious Dog Treats. “Julie Chapman’s example pushed me to take a harder look at our own practices, and that’s what ultimately gave me the confidence to shift our packaging to a more sustainable material. Making that change felt right then, and it continues to shape the decisions I make about the materials we use today.”
For a nonprofit rooted in workforce development, these sustainability efforts also provide practical learning opportunities for employees. Team members gain experience not only in production and quality control, but also in understanding how sustainable practices impact and affect business decisions.
The team looks for opportunities to think greener at home too. Small steps that make a big impact include starting to compost at home or through a community drop-off, making responsible nutrition and food choices, or looking for opportunities to get outside in nature and embrace being advocates in the community.
Community partnerships have played a key role in shaping that mindset. The nonprofit credits its early involvement with the ALX Dog Walk as inspiration for expanding its environmental commitments. One of the region’s largest pet-friendly events centered on eco-education and sustainability, the ALX Dog Walk brings together local businesses, animal advocates, and residents to promote greener living.

Pawfectly Delicious has participated in the event for the past four years and will return as a Walk Leader for the fifth annual ALX Dog Walk on Saturday, April 18. The event supports year-round environmental education initiatives and, this year, will also benefit the critical, impactful work of Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
The Pawfectly Delicious Dog Treats team is proud of its efforts in incorporating sustainability in its business model and thankful for its ongoing partnership with the ALX Dog Walk. And they hope to see you there next month!
