A Home Run for Alexandria

Little League’s Record Growth Reflects a Stronger Community

Alexandria, VA — This spring, the Alexandria Little League is hitting a grand slam for community connection, announcing a record-breaking enrollment of more than 820 players, including a historic 111 softball players. Far surpassing its role as a youth sports program, the league has evolved into one of the city’s strongest institutions, uniting neighborhoods, businesses, and generations through a shared love of the game.

Even as participation expands, league leaders say the mission remains unchanged: teaching Alexandria’s youth sportsmanship, honesty, courage, loyalty, respect, and teamwork.

Operating as Alexandria Baseball, Inc., a Virginia-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliated with the City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities, the organization depends heavily on volunteers. Coaches, parents, alums, and community members devote countless hours to managing teams, maintaining fields, organizing events, and mentoring players ages 4 to 16.

For League President Laura Engel, now serving her third year in the role, the league’s impact extends well beyond the diamond.

“I am deeply proud to be serving my third year as President of Alexandria Little League, an organization that is far more than just practices and games,” Engel said. “The league is a vibrant thread in our city’s social fabric, serving as a grassroots diplomatic bridge that unites neighborhoods and communities through a shared love of the game.”

Engel said partnerships across the city create opportunities for children that reach beyond athletics.

“By partnering with schools, ACHS baseball and softball programs, city government, RPCA, and local businesses, we ensure the diamond is a place where players gain not only athletic skills, but also develop resilience, confidence, leadership, collaboration, and lifelong friendships that build a stronger, more united city,” she said.

That mission is reflected in the league’s year-round programming. While spring remains the centerpiece season, Alexandria Little League offers clinics, camps, and competitive opportunities throughout the year. Summer includes baseball and softball camps, Sandlot play, and All-Stars tournament competition. Fall Ball registration opens in late August, while winter clinics begin in January. Registration for the 2027 spring season is expected to open in late fall 2026.

The league’s structure ensures opportunities for players at every stage of development. T-ball and Coach Pitch divisions are co-ed for children ages 4 to 7. Softball programs serve athletes ages 6 to 16, while baseball divisions are available for players ages 8 to 16.

Accessibility also remains central to the league’s mission. Scholarships are available for families facing financial hardship, ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate regardless of economic circumstances. League officials emphasize that the scholarship process is confidential and reflects the organization’s broader commitment to inclusion.

“We are committed to providing a program that allows every child to play baseball or softball,” the league states. “We desire to offer an affordable program for our players and families while maintaining the financial health and sustainability of the league.”

Community partnerships continue to play a critical role in the organization’s success. Local businesses sponsor teams and events, with banners lining fences at ballfields throughout the city. Alexandria City Public Schools works closely with the league to encourage interest in baseball and softball among younger students, while former players frequently return to mentor the next generation.

The league has evolved into a cherished local legacy for many Alexandria households, passed down through the decades. The games serve as a gathering spot on balmy spring evenings where neighbors connect, parents build lasting bonds in the stands and at the snack bar, and youth cultivate essential life skills like teamwork and perseverance.

As another season unfolds across Alexandria’s ballfields, Alexandria Little League’s influence is unmistakable: it is not simply developing athletes but also helping shape the city’s future character, connections, and unity.
