Alexandria, VA – Alexandria artist Kathryn Coneway’s Mother Trees are once again seeing the light of day. After getting sidelined from an exhibit at Huntley Meadows Park in March 2020 due to the pandemic, these delicate, unique paper cuts are on display at the Shirlington Library through the end of August.

The two-dimensional framed works with verse and image are hand-cut from paper, which is then mounted on a colored background. The verses include quotes by women artists and writers, adorned with scenes of families and nature lovers in the forest or walking along a path. Of seasons depicted in the leaves. Of hands holding a sapling ready for planting. Of branches rising up to the heavens and roots digging down through the earth.

Coneway explained, “The title for this series, Mother Trees, is inspired by ecologist Suzanne Simard, who researches connections between trees in the forest and describes the mother trees as the oldest and most connected, the ones who nurture others. The voices I celebrate are those that have been most influential in my own journey of finding solace and sanctuary in nature. I hope these voices will offer moments of peace and pause to viewers as they have for me.”

Coneway’s exhibit is part of Arlington Public Library’s Incubator program that spotlights local artists so that a greater number of diverse perspectives can be seen and more voices can be heard. Join a brief talk and reception with Coneway at Shirlington Library on Thursday, August 20, at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments and Q & A will follow the talk.
